During my time as High Sheriff of Lancashire I have been immensely impressed by the contribution young people make to our society. Their positive attitude and optimism for the future never ceases to inspire and motivate me. It is therefore important that this work which is often carried out or instigated by modest young people is recognised and rewarded.
Are you aware of a young person, or group of young people, ideally aged 21 or under, who have helped either a family member, an individual, a local organisation or their neighbourhood in some way or other in the last 12 months? If so I would like you to nominate them for the High Sheriff of Lancashire’s Young Citizen of the Year Award 2017. Nominations can be made by anyone.
I would like you to please consider initiatives that have made local communities safer or improved local environments to create better places for people to live. Or tell me about actions taken that have impacted on peoples lives and the differences they have made locally, nationally or internationally. I would also like to hear about acts of bravery and kindness.
The Winners and Runners-Up will be selected by a panel of judges which I will chair and includes representatives from the Lancashire Partnership Against Crime (LANPAC), the Lancashire Constabulary, the University of Central Lancashire (UCLAN) and Rodney Swarbrick CBE DL (a former High Sheriff who initiated this awards scheme).
All Finalists will be invited to attend a presentation at Lancashire Constabulary Headquarters in March 2019 when the Winner will receive £500 together with a specially commissioned trophy and a certificate from the High Sheriff and the Chief Constable, Andy Rhodes. There will also be two Runners-Up who will each receive £100 and a certificate.
This scheme is being administered by the LANPAC charity on behalf of the High Sheriff and the closing date for nominations is 31st January 2019. Any further information required can be obtained from Al Yusuf on 01772-412796.
I look forward to lots of nominations and reading about some terrific achievements that our young people are involved with in Lancashire.
With best wishes,
