PAYBACK TIME FOR DRUG DEALERS
Police have been applying to magistrates to confiscate cash
of £5,000 or less from those convicted of drug offences and £25,000 has been
donated to LANPAC by Lancashire Constabulary to be used by the community and
businesses for projects aimed at stopping the evil trade.
Lancashire Constabulary’s ‘Drug Champion’ Detective Superintendent Bob Helm
said ‘This is all about taking money from drug dealers and using it where it
matters. It is the perfect opportunity for police officers to contribute
financially to community based initiatives.’
‘This is payback time.’
He wants Community Beat Managers (CBM’s) to
work with businesses and groups to come up with fresh ideas
for tackling drug crime. He also wants community groups and businesses
to pledge cash themselves for projects that could be matched by the LANPAC cash.
Detective Superintendent Helm said ‘This provides an excellent opportunity for front
line officers to impact on drug related crime in our communities. We already have a
number of initiatives in place to tackle open drug markets and our recently commended
Operation Nimrod continues to close street level drug markets.’
Operation Nimrod has led to 540 drug dealers receiving 1,200 years
in custody across Lancashire since the initiative was launched in April 2002.
Equipment bought through this funding will have marked on it: Paid For by A Drug Dealer.
