Cash In Transit
Movement on Foot
Exercise special vigilance at the first and last part
of the journey - the most likely places for an attack.
Avoid a set routine - change times and routes
frequently.
Busy routes should be used in preference to quiet
routes.
Before using an alternative route, survey it for
likely danger points.
Reduce the risk from a surprise attack from behind by
a person using a vehicle - walk facing on-coming traffic.
Use an escort
The
Escort should:
-
Be first to leave the cash collecting premises and survey
the immediate area before the cash is brought out.
- Always walk a few metres behind the cash carrier.>
- Divide
the risk - use two or more persons to carry the cash,
bank smaller sums more frequently.
- Take
care when using a Night Safe - money should never be
exposed to view until the Night Safe is open.
- Stand with their backs to the safe, maintaining a
look-out.
- Be anonymous
- carry small amounts of cash on the person.
Alternatively, carry notes on the person, coins in a bag
or case.
Movement by vehicle
Where practicable, a closed vehicle should be used for
conveying moderate to large sums of money.
Vary times of collection, deposit or transfer.
Vary the route - a busy route is preferable to a quiet
route.
Vary the type of vehicle used if no loss of security
will result.
Vehicles regularly used for the conveyance of moderate
to large sums of money should be:
Security
procedures should be considered and implemented. For
example:
- Driver to remain in the vehicle at all times, with
doors locked and, when stationary, with vehicle
immobiliser and alarm set.
- The person in charge should decide the route
immediately prior to departure.
- Route instructions should only be given to the
driver when the cash and other personnel are in the
vehicle and the doors locked.
- Times of route should be known.
- In the event of non-arrival at destination within
an agreed acceptable period, enquiries should be made to
trace vehicle.
- Provide an escort, the strength of which will
depend on the amount carried.
- For large sums, at least two able bodied persons
in addition to the driver are recommended.
- Use only trusted employees and give specific
duties during loading, unloading and in the case of
attack.
- Use an escort in a separate vehicle, which should
travel at a convenient distance behind the cash vehicle.
- When the cash vehicle is stationary at its
destination the escort vehicle should park immediately in
front, the driver at the wheel.
- Consider communication between base and cash
vehicle / escort vehicle.
- Do not use hired vehicles, taxis, or public
transport to convey cash or valuables.
